Meet the Spurlocks!
Gilbert Spurlock was born in 1921 and lived most of his life in Lamesa, Texas. After serving several years in the U.S. Navy, Spurlock returned home and eventually began working at a small drive-in in Lamesa. In 1951, when he was 30 years old, Spurlock was given the opportunity to purchase that very same drive-in. Soon after, Spurlock and his wife Vida Jo (pictured left) began operations as Spurlock’s Super Dog Drive-In, selling homemade Super Dogs, burgers, fries, and old-fashioned malts.
Spurlock ran the hometown staple for many years until his semi-retirement, when his son, Doug Spurlock, began the day-to-day operations. After Spurlock’s passing in 1998, Doug took over the family business in its entirety. Spurlock’s Super Dog Drive-In continued operating in Lamesa under Doug until his own retirement in 2013.
Doug’s daughter, Kristi, always dreamt of continuing her grandfather’s legacy, and in 2012 she opened her own Spurlock’s Super Dog Drive-In in Anna Texas under the name “Spurlock’s Malt Shop”. Kristi had the privilege of opening her family’s North Texas location inside one of Anna’s most historic buildings. The Malt Shop building in Anna was built in 1959 and remains in its original location today with it’s familiar neon sign standing tall along highway 5. Opening her business one year before her father’s retirement, and subsequent closing of the West Texas location, ensured that Spurlock’s history of continuous operations remained intact. At Spurlock’s Malt Shop in Anna, you can expect to find delicious, made-to-order burgers, homemade Super Dogs, and old-fashioned malts, as well as many other items, made the same way Kristi’s Grandfather made them over 70 years ago. Kristi and her family look forward to continuing the Spurlock family business and serving the Anna Texas community for many years to come.
